We are working with the Maine Commission on Indigent Legal Services (MCILS), to:
-
Identify and develop best practices to facilitate MCILS’s training, evaluation and support of court appointed counsel
-
Identify strategies to increase the recruitment and retention of public defense lawyers in rural communities
-
Develop training curriculum concepts and provide training to the criminal defense bar on relevant topics
-
This project included conducting court observations in several rural counties.
-
We hosted two training for Maine lawyers, one focused on small group skills practice for new lawyers and another for all criminal defense counsel spanning many practice areas.
-
-
Examine and support the delivery of public defense services in Maine by developing tools to aid MCILS in their assessment and support of Maine’s court appointed counsel
